In an opening ceremony of 10th September, this year’s Electronics Goes Green Conference awarded Micropro’s Paul Maher it’s Eco-bear Award. The award was given to Paul “for his commitment to environmental protection and his team’s inspiring ideas on sustainable development in technology and business solutions”. An Eco-Bear award was also given to Wayne Rifer of EPEAT (United States) and Charuk Hengrasmee of the Electrical and Electronics Institute (Bangkok).
Paul Maher is Managing Director of Micropro, which develops the iameco range of computers. MicroPro has worked since 1991 in the Eco-design of PC’s . In 2003, as part of the LIFE-Environment Project HEATSUN and with the support of the Irish EPA’s Cleaner Greener Production Programme MicroPro developed the first iameco computer, a later version of which was awarded the first European Eco-Label for integrated desktop computers in 2011. This PC achieved 50% reduction in energy use and GHG emissions. R&D also includes a Life Cycle Assessment and a disassembly evaluation.
MicroPro is currently Irish Partner in a European FP7 Project called ZeroWIN (Zero Waste Industrial Networks) which explores the development of zero waste strategies in industrial networks. Micropro is also Irish Partner in a second FP7 project called LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) to Go, a project aiming to simplify the use of Life Cycle Assessment by SMES’s. MicroPro is also developing a new Laptop computer, the iameco D4R (Design for Reuse) that will achieve even greater reductions in energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and materials waste and water use.
The EGG 2012 Conference was organised by the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin and was a four-day event was attended by 450 conference delegates with a wide range of backgrounds in technology development, industrial management and environmental policy. Together the participants contributed 6 keynote speeches, 155 presentations organized in five parallel sessions, 30 posters, 5 forums and tutorials on Sunday and immeasurable know-how and experience during the discussions and networking sessions.
EGG 2012 Bear Award is another 1st for MicroPro, a Dublin based company that has acquired a world reputation for cutting-edge computer eco-design with its award winning products.
